EIGHTEEN

“We’ll try something else,” Larry said. “Now, understand, I’m not accusing anyone of being a liar.”

We stared at him. I was as clueless as Rosa and Valerie about what he was cooking up.

“There’s something I’d like to try,” he said.

We waited. Valerie stared at him like he had three heads. Rosa motioned with her hands for him to bring it on.

Larry opened up his satchel and rooted around before pulling out a small black-and-white gadget. I had an idea what it was and laughed.

“Since you find this so funny, Kell, you can go first,” he said.

“You’re joking,” I said.

“I’m not,” Larry said.

He waved at me to come to him. I made a face.

“What is it?” Rosa asked, leaning forward to get a better look.

“A lie detector machine,” Larry said.

Rosa threw back her head and laughed. “You are too much, Larry.”

Larry had told me about it before, but I’d never seen it. He’d said he was glad that Gin didn’t know he had one because she’d whip it out on a daily basis. Thank God Gretchen didn’t know a home model existed, or I’d be done for sure.

“Kell,” Larry said, beckoning me with his finger.

I sat down at the table in the chair next to him and shot him a ‘Are you sure you want to do this’ look.

“How does it work?” Rosa asked.

Larry held it up, so Rosa could see it.

The machine was the size of a hand-held computer game, about nine inches long, six inches wide, and two inches thick.

“De-Fib-ulator,” Rosa read.

“For God’s sake,” Valerie muttered.

Rosa flashed a huge smile. “That’s wild,” she said. “Does it work?”

“You think something with the name De-Fib-ulator actually works?” Valerie asked her.

Rosa ignored her question and looked at Larry.

“It’s amazingly accurate for what it is,” Larry said. “I’ve used ones that sold for thousands. This one comes close.”

“Give me a break,” Valerie said. She crossed her legs and folded her hands.

“How does it work?” Rosa asked, reaching out her palm.

Larry handed it to her. “I ask three yes-no questions to get a baseline reading. Then I ask the real questions.”

“What does it do if you’re lying?” Rosa asked, scrutinizing it.

Larry hesitated. He didn’t want to tell her. I snickered.

“Tell her,” I said.

“What?” Rosa looked from me to Larry.

“Well, it’s not real scientific, Rosa,” he said. “This character’s face comes up. Fellow by the name of Demonochio. If you’re lying—”

“Yes?” Rosa asked.

“His nose and horns grow,” Larry said.

Valerie made a disgusted sound. Rosa chuckled with delight. “We need to get one of these, Val.”

“Maybe you should take it,” Valerie suggested to Larry, scowling. “How do we know we can trust you?”

“Sure,” he said. “If you want to question me later, I don’t have a problem with it. I’ll show you how it works. Nothing’s admissible, of course, but let’s see what happens.”

“You can get a false positive, can’t you?” Valerie asked.

Larry shrugged. “I’m trained in how to use this. The more experience you have with it, the better the results.”

Valerie still didn’t buy it, but Rosa was curious.
